We offer individual campus visits Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. These one-on-one tours give you the time and space to explore our campus at your own pace and get your specific questions answered.

To ensure our students thrive, we look for young adults with:

  • Intellectual or developmental disability diagnosis
  • Age 18 or older
  • Independent self-care and mobility
  • Motivation for personal growth and learning

Shepherds College serves individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as significant learning, cognitive, and developmental conditions, whose disability impacts their ability to access course content without a system of educational support and services.

Occupational Program Admissions Criteria

Candidates for admission will need to meet the following qualifications.

General:

  • Have a diagnosed intellectual/developmental disability or significant learning challenges
  • Be motivated and have an eagerness to learn
  • Have the ability to receive information and instruction from staff and provide responses and feedback when necessary
  • Have the ability to make the commitment required of an educational/transitional program
  • Have completed four years of high school education, preferably culminating with a high school diploma or certificate of completion
  • Be at least 18 years of age by August 31 of the year the student starts Shepherds College. (Note: Students not 18 at the start of the school year will need housing adjustments at the start of the school year.)
  • Satisfy all requirements of the Shepherds College Admissions process as outlined on the Shepherds College application for enrollment
    • Submit all required materials
      • Application/Application Essay
      • IEP (most recent)
      • Psych Evaluation (preferably from the last three years)
      • Three references
      • Transcript
    • Complete either virtual or on-campus visit
      • The Application Review Team reserves the right to require additional visits for further evaluation

Academic

  • Demonstrate academic skills suitable for Shepherds College as determined by Admissions assessments
  • Have the ability to maintain appropriate professional behavior and perform with minimal supervision at an internship in a competitive business setting
  • Participate in classroom lessons with accommodation and support within a 7:1 staff-to-student ratio

Student Life

  • Perform daily hygiene routines independently, relying on, at most, verbal prompts or reminders from staff
  • Have a desire to live independently and have a family that supports that goal
  • Possess the ability to function without direct supervision in the residential setting safely
  • Demonstrate a history of good citizenship and the ability to follow rules

Nursing

  • Have minimal medical needs – require no more than three hours per week of nursing care
  • Be free from communicable diseases

Behavioral

  • Agree to abide by the Community Covenant established by Shepherds College
  • Have acceptable social behavior verified by school, family, or another source
  • Have no current or recent thoughts and/or record of harming self or others
  • Have not had any acts of physical aggression in the last two years
  • Have not had a history of sexual aggression or predatory behavior towards others
  • Must notify Shepherds College of any and all incidents involving physical aggression, self-harm, non-consensual sexual engagement, and any arrests and/or convictions

Admissions by Exception to the Criteria

Students failing to meet one or more of the criteria should reach out to an Admissions Representative to address concerns related to eligibility. Students who fail to meet one or more of the criteria as approved and determined by the Application Review Team can be admitted by exception. Students who are admitted by exception will be placed on a student success plan. The advising department will develop and implement the student success plan with input from relevant departments. Students admitted by exception will be informed of the exception prior to enrollment. During orientation, the student will meet with his/her advisor to go over the student success plan. The student success plan will be evaluated by the advisor in accordance with the timeframe stipulated in the student success plan to determine if the student needs to remain on the plan, be removed from the plan, or have the plan modified.

The cost to attend Shepherds College for resident students during the 2025-2026 school year is $64,900. Costs to attend Shepherds College during the 2026-2027 school year will be published in the early spring of 2026.

The tuition fee includes all instruction, curricular materials, textbooks, room & board, and residential care.

Room and board include three meals daily, on-campus residence, and residential support staff.

SC Code of Conduct with Regard to Education Loans

Need-based scholarships are available through Shepherds College. Various states also have funding programs that may help pay for a Shepherds College education. Please contact the Financial Aid office at 262-878-6345 or email here to learn about these options. In addition, we have found the scholarships listed below from other organizations.

Potential Funding Resources

Society’s Assets, a resource for people with disabilities, will make a scholarship application available each year, with a deadline of mid-March. For full details and the application, click below:

Students with any disability could be eligible for up to five awards ranging from $500 to $5000. Applicants must reside in the Society’s Assets service area, which includes Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Rock, and Jefferson counties. Graduating high school seniors, continuing students, or adults returning to school on a full-time basis to seek a post-secondary degree in the upcoming fall are eligible. 

Prior successful applicants can reapply, but they cannot win more than twice.

Shepherds College prohibits any employee with the responsibilities of an agent of the school with respect to FFELP, private education loans, or a loan used to pay for a student’s education from all of the following:

  • Revenue-sharing arrangements with any lender
  • Receiving gifts from a lender, a guarantor, or loan services
  • Having a contracting arrangement providing financial benefit from any lender or affiliate of a lender
  • Directing borrowers to particular lenders or refusing or delaying loan certifications
  • Accepting or making offers of funds for private loans
  • Providing call center or financial aid staffing assistance

4. Receive Determination

If a student has their full application submitted and their visit completed within the decision window, they can expect to receive one of the following decisions on the “Decision Posted” date:

a. Accepted – Congratulations! You are eligible to attend Shepherds College for the following fall semester. To reserve your spot while pursuing financial aid, return your “Intent to Enroll” form.

b. Accepted by Exception – You may have met all criteria except one, and the Application Review Team believes you would be successful at Shepherds College. To read more about this determination, please visit the Admissions Criteria page.

c. Accepted (Waitlist) – You have been accepted, but given the volume of applicants who have been accepted, you have been placed on a waitlist for the following year. For more information regarding this determination, please contact the Shepherds College Admissions Team.

d. Deferment (Further Evaluation) – Based on the information presented in the application or the outcome of the visit, the team wishes to spend more time getting to know you to determine if the amount of support available at Shepherds College is appropriate for you. The Shepherds College Application Review Team reserves the right to request additional visits to campus to determine a prospective student’s fit.

e. Not a Fit – Based on the application and visit, the Application Review Team believes that, at this time, the level of support on campus would not be sufficient to help the student be successful.

Need-based scholarships are available through Shepherds College. Various states also have funding programs that may help pay for a Shepherds College education. Please contact the Financial Aid office at 262-878-6345 or email here to learn about these options. In addition, we have found the scholarships listed below from other organizations.

Potential Funding Resources

Society’s Assets Scholarship Awards—Society’s Assets will make applications for the 2025 Scholarship Awards program available. Area high schools and colleges will receive application packets, and the public may also inquire with the office listed below. Students with physical or sensory disabilities could be eligible for up to five awards ranging from $500 to $5000. Applicants must reside in the Society’s Assets service area, which includes Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Rock, and Jefferson counties. Graduating high school seniors, continuing students, or adults returning to school on a full-time basis to seek a post-secondary degree in the fall of 2025 are eligible. Judging will be based on academic record, extracurricular activities, personal essay, and recommendations. All application materials must be postmarked by February 1, 2025.
